Maiorca è la maggiore delle Isole Baleari, con 400 km di sviluppo costiero: è per noi l’ultima isola dell’arcipelago spagnolo da scoprire in kayak, dopo aver completato il periplo delle altre isole minori, Minorca nell’inverno 2009 ed Ibiza&Formentera nell’inverno 2010.
Abitata sin dall’età preistorica, Maiorca ha sempre rivestito una posizione strategica nel Mar Mediterraneo, è stata colonizzata da greci, romani ed arabi: ricca di un turbolento passato è divenuta ben presto una delle mete predilette del turismo nautico.
Isola catalana poco distante dalle coste spagnole, Maiorca presenta una costa frastagliata, caratterizzata sia da scogliere impressionanti che da ampie spiagge sabbiose; le sue alte temperature estive sono mitigate dalla presenza costante di una forte brezza marina.
Ovviamente in campeggio nautico, viaggeremo dotati dell’attrezzatura necessaria per affrontare in sicurezza la navigazione costiera, stivando nei gavoni stagni dei kayak tutto l’occorrente per un viaggio in autonomia, condotto nel pieno rispetto dell’ambiente naturale.
Ricca di parchi naturali e riserve marine, Maiorca rappresenta un importante ecosistema per flora e fauna selvatiche: speriamo di viaggiare in compagnia di naturalisti, biologi e geologi per meglio comprendere ed apprezzare le bellezze naturali dell’isola.
Cercheremo di completare il periplo di Maiorca mantenendo un’andatura turistica di circa 20-25 km al giorno, in ragione delle condizioni meteo marine: approfittando dello sguardo privilegiato dal kayak, raccoglieremo nuovo materiale video fotografico.
Attraverso questro blog dedicato sarà possibile seguire in tempo reale i lavori di preparazione e le varie tappe del viaggio, per condividere l’esperienza di una nuova avventura in kayak da mare.
Majorca is the largest of the Balearic Islands with its coastline of over 200 n. m.: it is the last island of the Spanish archipelago that we want to explore by kayak, after having done the circumnavigation of the other smaller islands of Minorca in December 2009 and Ibiza & Formentera in December 2010.
Always inhabited since pre-historic times, Majorca has always enjoyed a strategic position in the Mediterranean, it was colonised by the Romans, the Byzantines and the Moors, and its rich history, nature and art make the island a perfect destination for a sea kayak expedition.
Just off the Spanish mainland, the island has a craggy coastline, characterised by rocky cliffs to the north east and long sandy beaches on the south west. Majorca’s hot summer temperatures are mitigated by the constant presence of a strong breeze from the north.
Obviously by kayak, we will paddle anti-clockwise around the island, will stow the necessary equipment for a safe and self-sufficient expedition in the watertight hatches, as well as tents and stove on deck, to conduct the voyage in complete respect for the natural environment.
Rich in nature and marine reserves, Majorca represents an important ecosystem for wild flora and fauna: we will have naturalists and geologists on the team, to help us better understand and appreciate the natural values of the island.
Completing the perimeter in about 3 weeks with easy stretches of around 10-15 miles a day, we will paddle according to the weather conditions and making the most of the scenery only available to kayakers, we will accumulate new video and photographic material.
